From time to time I will allow learners the chance to obtain extra credit. I usually will not mention these opportunities in class, so you must check the blog on a weekly basis in order to take advantage. You have until Midnight, September 02, 2007 to respond to this topic. After that all bets are off! You must respond to the topic with at least a paragraph in order to get the points. The paragraph must indicate that you thought about about the topic and not just answering to get the points. Post your answers in the comment session and remember to use your full name when responding so that you will receive credit.
Topic: Consider the concept of stigmatization and discuss whether certain types of criminals are more easily stigmatized than others. Consider why there might be a difference in stigma's impact.
Welcome to SOCI 2336
Hi Class and welcome to Introduction to Criminology (SOCI 2336). I will be your guide as we navigate through theory and current trends that inform the field of criminology. This course will survey the descriptive, empirical, and theoretical issues in the study of crime and delinquency and considers the role of social, cultural, economic, and political implications that determine criminal behavior. You will be exposed to the major theoretical perspectives in the field, as well as to the critiques and uses of these perspectives in the prevention and response to crime. Please do not fear...it is a lot less complicated than it sounds and you will find that you know about the topics we will discuss than you ever imagined.

Week 1 - August 27
Hello Learners,
In Chapter 1: “Crime and Criminology” we will attempt to distinguish between criminology and criminal justice. The history of criminology will be explored including, but not limited to criminology and sociology theorists, theoretical perspectives, contemporary criminology, and ethical issues in criminology. Please understand that this is your class and you are all welcome to share your views during discussions. Although our views will invariable differ from topic to topic over the course of the semester please be mindful that we must respect and be kind to one another.
Each week I will be posting relevant information to help you to better negotiate the course. Items posted will include links to criminology based websites, information on articles, and various other elements to augment your learning. This week I have posted a website for APA (American Psychological Association) citation and referencing guidelines. We will discuss this resource further during class.
